This video produced in celebration of the wwwing of the special exhibition Military Rituals – Symbol of the Joseon Dynasty’s Military Power aims to compellingly convey the diversity of Korean cultural heritage through a harmony between tangible cultural heritage (the exhibited artifacts) and intangible cultural heritage (pansori). Filmed inside the exhibition gallery in juxtaposition with scenes of exhibited objects, it presents a performance of two acts from Jeokbyeokga – “Zhao Yun Firing Arrows” and “Raging Fire at Red Cliff” – by Kim Ilgu, a state-designated practitioner of the intangible cultural heritage of pansori.

* Jeokbyeokga: an epic musical story inspired by the legend of the Battle of the Red Cliffs from the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi Yanyi) depicting battles between forces led by Cao Cao, Sun Quan, and Liu Bei.

The video consists of two parts— “Zhao Yun Firing Arrows” and “Raging Fire at Red Cliff.” It will offer an opportunity to enjoy a performance of Jeokbyeokga by Kim Ilgu vividly presenting with beautiful singing full of vigor, the tense life-or-death struggles of the Battle of the Red Cliffs while exploring the special exhibition Military Rituals – Symbol of Joseon Dynasty’s Military Power.

The National Palace Museum of Korea will continue to offer diverse innovative content to promote public interest in the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Korea. It is hoped that this video will provide comfort while vitalizing the daily lives of people exhausted by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
